Announcement: LMS–HIMR Research School on Growth and Expansion in Groups, Warwick, 6-10 July 2026

Next summer, Jitendra Bajpai and I are organizing an LMS–HIMR Research School on “Growth and Expansion in Groups” here at the University of Warwick, 6–10 July 2026.

The school is aimed at graduate students and early-career researchers working in group theory (finite or infinite), especially any growth or diameter-related questions, or adjacent fields. There will be a series of minicourses on topics such as expansion in finite and classical groups, random walks and Poisson boundary theory, analytic approaches to growth, and word maps.

Minicourses will be given by Daniele Dona, Anna Erschler, Itay Glazer, and Noam Lifschitz. Additional plenary talks will be given by Laura Ciobanu, Ben Green, Harald Helfgott, and Michael Magee.

URSS Projects for Summer 2026

I’m recruiting 1–2 exceptional undergraduate students for an 8-week URSS summer project in asymptotic group theory (or similar, open to discussion). Students must generally be Warwick undergraduates currently in Year 3, and preference will be given to students considering a future in research mathematics. The project might involve guided reading, the study of some toy case of some larger conjecture, or some computational work.

  • Eligibility: Warwick Maths or CS student currently in third year.
  • Commitment: ~8 weeks over summer full-time, including 1–2 short meetings/week.
  • Mode: In-person preferred, online hybrid acceptable.

How to apply (5 minutes):

  1. Complete the short form by Thurs 22 Jan 2026, midnight.
  2. Use your @warwick.ac.uk email.
